I was listening to the TedTalk on Bringing the Context Back into Learning. It is correct when we were younger; there was that one person in class who would ask the question why. Remembering that one person who would ask why was me. One day I was in math class, and it was at the point where I was becoming agitated on learning math such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and other forms of math. Raising my hand in the middle of class, I asked what the point of learning these forms of math is? I will NEVER use this in college and or my career.
At that point, my teacher states, how do you know? You have no idea what you want to be when you get older.
I feel I was one of the few examples in this world who actually knew at a young age what I wanted to do with my life. I told her I would never need math in my life except for knowing how to add, subtract, divide, and multiply, and that is all I need to know. Well, my teacher did not like that answer because most people do not know what they want out of life, let alone what they want to go to college for. I knew what I wanted out of life; I knew I would never take any courses in college on math, no matter the type of math, even if it is basic math. After this episode in school, my teacher did not appreciate being put on the spot. The next day she printed out this paper and gave it to me in front of the class. I have no idea what it was about; all I remember is the heading, which said, Why Do you Need to Learn Math Now For the Future. At that point I had to laugh because deep down she went out of her way to prove me wrong, and I knew it was pointless.
This TedTalk is about the incident I went through when I was in high school. According to Devries (2012), fun is just another form of learning. It would help if you learned what learning is and why it is essential and fun. If this is not presented to you in a way for you to digest the information. It is going to be hard to learn and accept what is being taught. He makes a good point when saying, according to Devries (2012), not knowing why you are learning information is not motivating at all. Knowing why your learning the information and then applying what we are learning, in reality, is more captivating.
Putting games together to focus on the job you are performing is a good tactic you need to use in order to help individuals want to do their job. According to Devries (2012), exploring the path of wanting to know if games pertaining to school would be beneficial for children. Using learnt through play has proven to be a successful learning experience. When educational computer games are adopted in supporting learning in the classroom, the pedagogical aspects such as learning style should be taken into account. According to Devries (2012), as different people learn and process information differently, it is important to understand individual learning style which allows the prediction of the way learners react and feel in different situations.
