2020 has been a monumental catastrophe, one that kept getting worse and worse as the months dragged on. The worst pandemic and economic recession in over 100 years, civil strife and Political stressors. As the situation worsened, and deaths from COVID-19 continued to climb, people worldwide waited and hoped for a return to normal. The COVID-19 Vaccines that are beginning to become available are the light at the end of the tunnel, but will everyone take them?
The news that a Vaccine would be available by the end of 2020 was greeted with relief. Businesses that had been struggling began to have hopes for survival, and the Stock Market rebounded because of the optimism from the effects. Gradually, problems became apparent. The new Vaccines would take time to manufacture and would not be available to everyone at first. Who should get the Vaccines, in what order of importance? Surveys of Americans said that upwards 60% of people distrusted the Vaccines and were hesitant to take them. Safety concerns, conspiracy theories, Denial that the virus exists, these were all factors.
The Vaccines were rushed through development by necessity, and fear of side effects is a valid concern for many people. Also, the only way to defeat a virus like COVID-19 is for enough of the population to be Vaccinated or have Antibodies from surviving the virus. With people unwilling to take the Vaccines, we might not be able to inoculate enough people to stop the Virus. Lawmakers have discussed making Vaccination mandatory, but that poses other problems in itself. Forcing Vaccination upon people would be violating constitutional rights, as well angering and already agitated population. People are on edge, and this situation could become a powderkeg.
The risks associated with the Vaccines are real, but compared to the risks with not getting it, they are minimal. The consequences for not getting the Vaccine are not just limited to ourselves. They will be felt by the weakest amongst us, who will suffer because we allowed fear of side effects to keep us from taking action. The average 20-something will probably be fine if they contract COVID-19 and may feel that it is unnecessary to get a Vaccine, but a 70 year old Diabetic Patient they pass in the Supermarket could die because of it. There’s more to this discussion than just personal responsibility, and we should all get Vaccinated to protect those of us who can’t protect themselves. Cancer Patients, people with Autoimmune diseases, Elderly individuals with respiratory problems, these are examples of people who cannot take the vaccine but would be absolutely wiped out by an exposure to COVID-19.
If we are to beat this Virus, we must pull together and do what is necessary for the good of everyone, not just ourselves. This year, and this Virus has divided us and kept us separated, and it is only through solidarity that we will be able to recover. Until then, the Carnage will continue.
