Getting Started
This assignment will introduce you to the components of public speaking and how to prepare a speech.
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of public speaking and speech delivery principles as related to persuasive speaking.
- Prepare speech topics and outlines.
- Prepare each of the components of a speech.

Instructions
- Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
- Review Chapter 11.2 on Persuasion in Communication in the Real World: An Introduction to Communication Studies
- Consider this scenario: You are planning to deliver a speech to a group of college freshmen to persuade them to stick to a budget.
- Write a paper using the knowledge that you have acquired during the course.
- Part 1: Write one page in which you identify the type of introductory and concluding techniques that would be the most effective for a persuasive speech and explain your reasoning.
- Part 2: Write one page addressing the following questions:
- How would the persuasive elements of your speech change if the audience were college seniors?
- College students hear a lot of speeches geared toward them about finances. How could you present persuasive information or present it in a way that would hold their interest based on the audience’s orientation to the proposition.
- What techniques would you employ in the outline to persuade the audience?
- Part 3: Create a speaking outline for this speech.
