Spoken word is a type of poetry that has been around for years and it was made popular and main streamed by producer Russell Simmons. He first started “Def Comedy Jam” which helped many young comics find the platform that made them famous. Comedians like Martin Lawrence, Chris Tucker and Mike Epps, plus many more.
After his success he wanted to use his proven model to produce “Def Poetry Jam” to introduce the world to spoken word. For years now he has sponsored and produced a yearly competition called “Brave New Voices” for high school students to express themselves.
While watching these clips please note moments that would be considered “theatrical”.
- Use of hand gestures
- Body Language
- Eye contact
- Vocal variations
- Facial expression
Also, pay attention to moments that you were able to “suspend your disbelief”. At any time did you find yourself emotionally connecting or believing the performers.
