Gathering and Analyzing Data Using Social Science Methodologies

Introduction
This assignment will give you the opportunity to gather data using surveys on a key sociological topic of deviance in order to evaluate causal arguments on fear of crime. The data collected will require you to demonstrate the ability to analyze information and to compare official crime data to draw conclusions about assertions on crime fear; and, to organize your presentation of findings that suggest future inquiries about fear of crime.
Assignment Topic
Sociologists are concerned with how individuals perceive the threat of crime in such ways that their fears may or may not be connected with the reality of it and the actual risk of criminal victimization. Gender, race/ethnicity, age, and other relevant statutes are found to be significantly correlated with fear of crime, over and beyond the safety of neighborhood residents and past experiences. Sociological research reports these patterns as well as reports on groups more at risk of predatory crimes. What is the discrepancy between crime data and afraid-of-crime, populations? What are the consequences of fear of crime?
Instructions and Grading Rubric
Make 20 copies of the introduction to the questionnaire and of the questionnaire. You can print the introduction on one side of the page and the questionnaire on the other OR you can print the presentation of the questionnaire and the questionnaire on separate pages and staple them together. Make sure that all questionnaires have the same color of paper, same font, same presentation, the same order of questions, and same request from you to your subjects, same for ALL. Do not forget to say please and thank your subjects for their contribution to the survey.
First of all, decide on the specific Age and Race/Ethnic group you want to survey. Give the questionnaire to 10 females and 10 males of this same age and race/ethnic groups and ask politely for their input. Try to survey one individual at a time or make sure that the subjects are separated enough in order to not influence each other’s answers. The survey takes at most 3 minutes to answer it. Thank them when finished.
Questions
1) Gather the data and separate the questionnaires by gender. Compute the mean of fear of crime for individual offenses and the fear of crime for each gender group. Construct Table 1 to present the averages of fear of crime for each crime and for the gender groups. 10 points

2) Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between male and female groups on fear of crime averages. Make sure to address the figures from Table 1 when discussing the results. Write a conclusion on the above findings and about the comparisons of your findings with the actual risk of criminal victimization by gender groups (30 points). See US Victimization Survey https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/cv17.pdf

3) Rank the offenses from most fear (rank 1st) to least fear (rank 16th) for each gender group and present the rankings in Table 2. 10 points

4) Based on these ordinal data, are there similarities and differences between the genders in terms of offense-rankings. Make sure to address the data in Table 2 when discussing the results. Write a conclusion on the above findings and about comparisons of your findings with the actual frequency of offenses https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2017/crime-in-the-u.s.-2017/topic-pages/tables/table-1 and risk of victimization by gender groups (30 points) http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/cv17.pdf

5) Offer outside sources to support the risk-fear discrepancies or lack thereof of the gender groups averages and offense rankings. Offer an explanation for your findings from the research literature. 10 points
