Hello class! I have come up with a topic that will affect everyone in the class. It is a question that has come up in debates recently and has been seen in the news. Are general ed classes a necessary part of a college education? There is also a debate about reducing the number of general ed units required for a degree. I would love to hear what everyone thinks about this topic as you are all college students. I have included some links to articles that debate the validity of these classes. Please keep in mind these are mostly opinion articles as there is very little in the way of research related to this topic. If you do happen to find some please feel free to post it!
With that, I will leave you to begin the discussion. I will add my quick perspective: I think these classes are important to a college education, but I believe there is a better way to incorporate them. In high school, I was part of a pilot program that incorporated history, English, and religion into one class. It forced students to look at topics and how they can affect each other. Our writing for our English class was about the information we learned on history and religion so we were not writing papers in three separate classes which cut down on some of the homework. I felt that this was really effective. In college, classes could also be geared toward or combined with major classes. What are some subjects that you feel could be combined effectively?
