Learning needs for different patient populations

As you complete this course discuss the special teaching and learning needs for different patient populations by the advanced practice nurse. use you imagination Here is an example of a student response;

The advanced practice nurse is in a good position to provide health care teaching to patients with various disease conditions. This is because of his advanced academic knowledge and invaluable skill. Friedman, Cosby, & Boyko, (2014) stated that since the goal of nursing was to render the patient capable of meeting self-care needs, a process that often includes patient teaching, it is therefore important that every patient encounter ends with patient education and teaching (p. 19). In fact, teaching and counseling patients is just as crucial to their recovery as administering medications or changing bandages. According to Aldeen & Gisondi, (2015), “Nurses often juggle both roles aiding in the physical and emotional recovery of their patients” (p. 64). Before teaching it is important to assessing a patient’s understanding, this is because not all patients learn at the same rate or in the same way (Turner & Wellard, 2013). Some have limitations, such as illiteracy or developmental disorders that hinder learning and prevent them from fully grasping their diagnosis. Nurses must start by determining what a patient already knows and how much the patient can realistically learn. If a patient cannot read or has a learning disability, printed handouts or booklets may do little to help her. In this case, nurses must take a completely hands-on approach, demonstrating concepts instead of just talking about them. Nurses must sometimes include family members in the process, especially with pediatric patients, who depend on parents or other adult caregivers. According to Turner & Wellard, (2013), “It is also important to creating an atmosphere for learning and to teaching patients self-sufficiency” (p. 17)
Some of the special areas of teaching needs include; diabetic teaching. The patient will be able to describe the diabetic medications that they are on and how to properly take the medications. The patient will be able to demonstrate proper skin and foot care. The patient will be able to perform self-monitoring of blood glucose using a blood glucose meter as evidenced by demonstration of the technique to the nurse or nurse practitioner. The patient will be able to describe the benefits of regular exercise and how regular exercise can improve blood glucose control. Other disease conditions requiring teaching by the advanced practice nurse include hypertension, COPD, asthma, hypo and hyperthyroidism, antepartum, post-partum in fact any condition that brings a patient to the hospital should require adequate patient teaching by the advanced practice nurse (Aldeen & Gisondi, 2015).
