MENTAL DISORDER
Introduction
Mental disorder is exhibited through abnormal functioning in behaviour or simply reasoning (Streiner & Cairney 2010). This paper defines this abnormality and discusses on situations in which a person can be declared mentally abnormal.
Definition of mental disorder
Mental disorder is the disruption of a person’s normal psychological functioning that causes harm whether physical or emotional and may affect even the people around him. It is an involuntary social deviance which involves activities that are not socially accepted by the community and may result to misery on the victim’s side or even instances whereby a person deliberately withdrawals from others. Such behaviours may also pose risk of harm to those around the person or even to themselves (Blumenthal, Lavender & Zito Trust 2001).
This disorder is also defined as the breakdown of sensible connection between imagination and real life, beliefs and facts or even reasoning and the deeds that a person does in a normal setting without any external influence (Bolton 2008). So the lack of this connection is only applicable in one respect where the person is completely without influence like that of alcohol and not applicable when a person is in an emotional situation for instance when angered. In this case there is standard scale that is used to measure between sanity and insanity and is determined by the psychiatry medics (Blumenthal, S., Lavender, A., & Zito Trust, 2001).
Case studies
Jamie has a mental disorder because of the kind of speech he gives. The fact that he does not refer a bible or any other scripture confirms that he has hallucinations which are a major symptom of mental disorder. He refuses to be helped in seeking treatment which is a common character of people with mental disorders. Tom’s behaviour is weird and can be associated with mental illness because it is not usual for a hetero sexual person to be attracted to women wear. This behaviour is not socially acceptable which means that it is an abnormality which may make him shy and withdraw fro interacting with other normal people. However his case is not a serious one because he keeps it a secret and is ashamed of his actions. In cases where mentally ill people realize that the behaviour they are exhibiting is not socially acceptable then it can be regarded as a mild case which can be easily corrected by self initiative unlike the extreme cases where victims do not even acknowledge that they have a problem. So in Toms case the degree of this disorder is manageable and therefore intervention can be of help because he is likely to admit that he has a problem and accept help.
Conclusion
Mental disorder as classified is either mild or extreme and this is mostly measured according to a patient’s response to intervention. When a patient is not willing to be assisted medically and has to be forced to seek medical help, then that is regarded as a serious case. On the other side when a person feels that they have a psychological problem and can easily be talked to seeking help, then that is a mild case. However whether mild or extreme mental disorder is harmful to the affected and the community as a whole therefore studying people’s psychological functioning and behaviours is the first step towards identifying this abnormality.
