Group Therapy

Explain the group’s processes and stage of formation

While in group therapy as shown in the clip titled Group Therapy: A Live Demonstration, there are certain elements that are crucial to a group’s movement from a stage or phase of being total strangers to familiarity. The elements of group processes mainly include group norms, the generation of trust among members, conflict between members, resistance, as well as feedback from members.

Looking at the group at hand, substantial evidence from the clip confirms that the group is at the performing stage. At this particular stage, there is evident growth as the members are shown to not only share more of their experiences but also be willing to give and take feedback.  Mills and McBride (2016) note that at the performing stage, the group’s activities are more intense as self-disclosure is encouraged. This is quite evident in the group and more members are involved in each member’s story.

Explain curative factors that occurred in the group. Include how these factors might impact client progress

In the group, one cannot fail to notice two obvious curative factors. These include altruism and interpersonal learning. Altruism is the idea of group members “helping and supporting one another” (Hauber, Boon, & Vermeiren, 2019). In the group, the members give honest feedback to each other and this way can help and learn from each other in spite of the issues they have. The above introduces the idea of interpersonal learning as members were able to see themselves through the eyes of others. In helping and supporting each other through honest feedback, individual growth was happening.

Explain intragroup conflict that occurred and recommend strategies for managing the conflict

Interpersonal conflict appears to be one of the intragroup conflicts in the clip. Philip and Pam are an example of the members who had an interpersonal conflict. Aside from the above, the conflict also ensued when Gill was asked a question by Bonnie. The question was quite personal which showcased a sign of growth for the team. However, Gill felt like she was intruding and thus got defensive. One strategy that can help manage the conflicts that ensued includes talking directly about any factors that could be causing the conflict. Pointing out any occurrence of mirror reactions can also help manage conflict. Kleinberg (2015) writes that mirror reactions have the potential of disrupting any creative or helpful energies in a group. So, it is crucial to rid a group of these reactions.
