DISCUSSION 1

Big data pertains to the vast volume of data linked to people’s health situation from different sources at a single time. References can be from research studies, government agencies, and electronic health records. One inherent benefit of practicing big data in clinical systems includes sharing and availability of health information, improving decision-making when making medication. Has made identification risk factors that cause or lead to the diseases. The data available can be analyzed and immediate changes in behaviors that can reduce health risks or reduce harmful environment. Exposures such as therapy on cancer treatment could be put into big data and provide an overview of best treatment or cancer management. It aids in research. The Challenge or risk of using big data as part of a clinical system is the data’s security. Of which information may be hacked or stolen without the knowledge of users. It lacks privacy when it comes to confidential medical records. Patient details can be manipulated in the wrong ways; a strategy to alleviate data security is security through transmission security, anti-virus, firewalls, and data encryption.

DISCUSSION 2

Main Post

Big data refers to a large amount of information gathered through technology which we use to generate meaning in the world (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).  There are many benefits of using big data as part of a clinical system such as quick easy access to a plethora of patient information to use by the healthcare professionals and the patients.  Glassman (2017) states that patients being able to view their own health information and results through patient portals keep them up to date on labs, medications, and upcoming appointments.

The challenge of using big data as part of a clinical system is seen when there are large amounts of data coming through, but each set has its own language that needs to be manually translated as seen with HCA (Thew, 2016).  McGonigle and Mastrian (2018) states that a strategy for sorting through the large amounts of information coming through is to invest in data mining techniques.  There are many “data mining techniques,” one of them uses algorithms, these techniques place similar information into categories which makes it easier to analyze (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).
