Many people who grow up in industrialized high income countries buy our food supply at the grocery store with little understanding of where food comes from or its impact on the planet. Farmers who produce our food often are part of industrialized farming conglomerates or large intensive agricultural farms. In contrast, outside of high income income countries, many farmers are small scale and are producing primarily for their own families. So, although human agriculture has existed for about 8,000 -12,000 years, and industrial farming is less than a century old, industrial agriculture has become so prevalent that sustainable farming practices are now sometimes seen as “alternative” in high income countries such as the USA and much of Europe, Japan, China, etc. However, industrial agriculture may be less sustainable for a number of reasons.
Industrial farming has been linked to climate change, pollution, threats to human health and inhumane treatment of animals. Read the following article and then give one example of each of these links mentioned in the sentence above(in bold).
