Delegation
Leadership is getting things done through others. And one way to get things done through others
is through delegation. Delegation can lead to improved efficiency and development of the
delegates. It empowers others to become able to handle higher level tasks
Excellent leaders pass on important skills and abilities to those below them through delegation.
Delegation encourages subordinates to want to develop themselves. The critical point to note is
that delegation assigns responsibility and authority to the delegate while retaining ultimate
responsibility for its success. It gives others the authority to act on behalf of the leader or delegator.
To be an effective delegator three skills are important: trust, honesty and communication
Delegation reduces the leader’s workload giving the leader more time to concentrate on more
important and critical issues of concern. It also builds more meaningful work-based relationships
between leaders and their followers, helping them to feel more valued and important through
development of higher skills and knowledge
Delegation also helps break the monotony making them more talented, and more skilled as they
handle new delegated tasks. This makes the delegates more creative and efficient. Through
delegation leaders multiply themselves and become more able to bring stability, ability and
soundness to the organisation.
Leaders who delegate gain more credibility hence increasing their value, saves a leader time and
helps them achieve more as already said. Delegatees develop, build self-esteem since the leader
will have trust and confidence in them. Delegation enhances delegate jobs. Interesting jobs always
challenge those doing them making the job more enjoyable and more motivating. Delegation
builds teamwork and improves communication and coordination in the organisation. It is the best
form of training that strengthen the organisation
For effective delegation to take place the delegator must clearly define the task, and the delegatee
must understand the reason behind the delegation while at the same time having the competence to do the task. The delegator must be with support and must give the delegate a timeline for task
completion

Question:

been clearly articulated as in the case study above when a thoughtful classmate hits you with the
