Goal setting is an important part of anyone’s life. Bill Copeland says it best “The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score” (Copland B., 2018). One needs to have goals to develop purpose in their life. Short-term and long-term goals get you where you want to be by a planning process, an athlete setting up short and long term goals is best.Short term goals are goals that can be accomplished in the near future and there normally less difficult. These goals are vital to athletes because they help understand what there achieving. Short term goals need to be done regularly to help an athlete maintain their direction which will help complete long term goals (“How Should An Athlete Set Goals For Their Sport?,” 2019),an example of a short term goal can be as simple as adding 10 more pounds to your squats, bench, dumbells etc in the sports. Long term goals require longer amounts of time compared to short term goals. Long term goals are more difficult to achieve and provide an athlete with the bigger picture type goal at the end (“How Should An Athlete Set Goals For Their Sport?,” 2019).Being that long term goals take longer examples can be an athletes overall scores at the end of a season, losing weight to make weight for a fight, etc. To excel at a sport an athlete will have to be able and knowledgeable about goal setting. an athlete doesn’t need to just set goals from 5 to ten years from now, they need to focus on what they can do now and what they need to do to move towards their visions(stokes,2019). a peak performer and their coach know how to sit down and figure out the actions needed to take place from daily, weekly, monthly basis. this results in the athlete having well developed pre-competition plans and competitive plans (Williams,2015).

Which type of goal is best? Provide examples of types of goals and why they are effective. I think there are many types of goals. Outcome goals focus on the outcomes of sporting events and usually involve some sort of interpersonal comparison. A typical outcome goal might be to win a basketball game, place first in a volleyball tournament, defeat an opponent in tennis, or finish the season with a winning record. Performance goals specify an end product of performance that will be achieved by the athlete relatively independently of other performers and the team. For example, a typical performance goal for an athlete might be to strike out seven batters, score twenty-five points in a basketball game, serve five aces in a tennis match, or get fifteen kills in a volleyball game. Although I think process goals are the best. Process goals focus on specific behaviors exhibited throughout a performance. A typical process goal for an athlete might be to keep the left elbow straight while executing a golf drive, to an elbow down and wrist firm in the tennis backhand, or to focus on the spiker and not the ball in volleyball blocking. (Cox, R. 2012. Chapter 10. Pg. 248-249). How is goal setting effective in helping the athlete? I think the importance of goal setting for athletes helps focus attention and it is critical to maintain and enhance motivation. It gives direction both in the short term and long term and then you can see the success as you achieve your short term goals. Are some types of goals more effective in some sports than others? Please give examples. I think for goal setting to be effective it must be well planned and effective if it is to result in desired performance results. Some examples would be to, write goals down and regularly monitor progress, use short-range goals to achieve long-range goals. (Cox, R. 2012. Chapter 10. Pg. 250-251).
